SUCH A FOOL

CLAIRE
With one swing of his kilt, with one masterful look,
I became a love struck soul straight from a Bronte book,
I presumed that I attracted, never pausing to ask why,
Now I see it was the glint of gold and not the sparkle of my eye.

What silly notion led me to believe?
He could wed for love, why was I so naive,
Ive acted like a girl whos barely out of school,
How could I have been such a fool?

Now I see why we came here, with such haste and such speed,
For to see that giddy Laoghaire girl, was his overwhelming need,
Is it really any wonder that, she fills me with such rage?
Shes very pretty and shes slim, and shes scarcely half my age.

What silly notion led me to conclude?
He cared for me or that he ever could,
Ive acted like a girl whos barely out of school,
How could I have been such a fool?

CLAIRE
I take it youve been to see Laoghaire. And no doubt youve been and collected your money as a married man

JAMIE
Aye, I said hello to the lass. And aye, I picked up the rents due to me.  I needed that money.

CLAIRE
Oh, did you? What for exactly?

JAMIE
For this. The wedding ring I had made for you.

CLAIRE
Oh Jamie!

JAMIE
Did you really think that as my bride, Id willingly deceive,
And sell my very soul away, for the pittance I receive

Or break the sacred vows Id made to you on bended knee,
With a lass thats neer been more than just, a sister to me.

What silly notion led you to decide,
I took you as a chattel, not a bride?
And its time that you grew up, for youre a lang time out o school,
How could you have been such a fool?

CLAIRE
Jamie, Im so sorry.

BOTH
How could you (I) have been such a fool?
