THE MESSAGE

DOUGAL
Iíve come fi Captain Randall, wií a message for you lassie,

CLAIRE
And what does the Captain say, pray tell?

DOUGAL
Well Itís nae an invitation, to go and share his bed,

CLAIRE
Good

DOUGAL
In fact, he is prepariní a prison cell

CLAIRE
For me?

DOUGAL
Aye

CLAIRE
But just what have I done?

DOUGAL
For a start my bonny lassie, you are a Sassenach

CLAIRE
But surely thatís never been a crime,

DOUGAL
Well thereís a lot oí lads that I ken, who think that it should be,
But legally itís nae, well, nae at this time

But Randall thinks that youíre a spy,
And he wonít be telt nae different , nae matter how you try,
But to your parlous situation, Iíve gaen a lot oí thought,
And all you have to do lass, is become ....a Scot.

CLAIRE
Do you really think I could pass as a Scot?

DOUGAL
No. But you could marry one of us

CLAIRE
Marry! Who?

DOUGAL
I thought perhaps young Jamie, might be the man for you,

CLAIRE
Jamie!

DOUGAL
Or Rupert wií his ain piece oí land,

CLAIRE
This just gets worse!

DOUGAL
Now I ken that he is grubby and his smell can cause offence,
But I am sure that he would scrub up, really rather grand.

CLAIRE
No thank you

DOUGAL
Well, think about Jamie

JAMIE
Aye, you were a wee bit quick there, in dismissiní me,
I am strong, and these teeth are aí mine,
And though thereís parts oí me lass, youíre nae acquaint wií yet,
I can, assure you, they all work just fine.

DOUGAL
Iím sorry if I caused alarm, but if you mairry Jamie, heíll keep you safe from harm,

CLAIRE
But Jamie, are you willing, to have me as your wife,

JAMIE
To protect you from that Black Jack,
Iíd lay down my very life
